Cross-Disciplinary Apprenticeships: Expanding Our Knowledge in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Cross-Disciplinary Apprenticeships: Expanding Our Knowledge in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Modern psychotherapy and psychiatry can sometimes feel disconnected from the body—practised, at times, from the neck up. Many conventionally trained therapists, counsellors, psychologists, and psychiatrists progress from undergraduate study to mid-career without ever engaging in complementary, embodied practices, unless they have sought them out independently. The regulatory frameworks that shape their education often omit somatic and experiential approaches, leaving a crucial gap in their skillset when working in the psychedelic space, where mind-body integration is central.

Conversely, allied health professionals—dentists, physiotherapists, and exercise physiologists, for example—understand health through a profoundly physical and embodied lens, yet many view the mind as a ‘black box’, an abstract entity separate from their day-to-day work. However, the high prevalence of psychosomatic and conversion conditions tells a different story, one that highlights the need for deeper psychological insight alongside somatic expertise.

Then, there is a third category of practitioners—those who operate outside conventional frameworks, often developing deep experience in embodiment practices and spiritual sensibilities. Energy healers, sound therapists, and practitioners rooted in holistic traditions bring wisdom and techniques that can be profoundly impactful but may lack grounding in clinical psychology, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience.

What has become evident in our discussions is that, regardless of how well-trained, well-paid, or well-regarded we may be, our disciplines remain siloed. And yet, working with psychedelic states demands an integrative approach. The psychiatrist who has never studied bodywork and the somatic healer who knows nothing about psychotropic medications are both missing key pieces of the puzzle.

This salon will focus on cross-disciplinary apprenticeships—a model for professional integration that allows us to fill our knowledge gaps through reciprocal learning. The goal is not just intellectual understanding but experiential exchange. Salon members will be encouraged to 'apprentice' themselves to others, whether through professional shadowing, informal meet-ups, or structured learning.

Psychedelics teach us that what we know is a drop, and what we don’t is an ocean. By approaching our work with curiosity and humility—rather than arrogance and certainty—we can achieve far greater outcomes, both for ourselves and for our clients.

About the Salon

This is an informal, invite-only gathering for like-minded clinicians exploring the intersection of neuroscience, therapy, and altered states of consciousness. We foster deep, candid discussions in a space that values intellectual rigour, humility, and curiosity.

Our goal is to create a supportive community where practitioners can challenge, consult, and collaborate—without pretence or dogma. Conversations often begin with psychedelics but evolve into broader, more enriching discussions.

This isn’t a clinical case conference, nor is it an esoteric free-for-all. We strike a balance between evidence-based practice and the ineffable, between rigorous thought and open-hearted exploration.
