Non-Ordinary States: Psychedelics in a Broader Framework

Non-Ordinary States: Psychedelics in a Broader Framework

The term psychedelic—from the Greek psyche (mind) and deloun (to manifest)—was coined to describe substances that reveal the deeper workings of consciousness. But as psychedelic-assisted therapy moves into the mainstream, it’s essential to consider these substances within a broader ecology of transformative practices.

Psychiatrist Stanislav Grof extensively explored non-ordinary states of consciousness—states that transcend typical waking awareness and can be profoundly healing and insightful. While psychedelics are a powerful tool in accessing these states, they are not the only path. Breathwork, hypnosis, meditation, prayer, embodied movement, and sound-based therapies can also unlock deep transformation, offering accessible and integrative ways to work with consciousness.

Cognitive scientist John Vervaeke describes an "ecology of practices"—a network of interwoven disciplines that cultivate wisdom and transformation. Psychedelics may be a central altar, but they are not the whole cathedral. By placing them within a wider framework, we develop a more sustainable and diverse approach to healing—one that supports both practitioners and clients in a holistic way.

This salon will explore the role of psychedelics alongside other modalities, asking how we can broaden our perspectives as therapists, facilitators, and seekers. The evening will include a guided meditation session, providing a direct experiential entry point into non-ordinary states.

About the Salon

This is an informal, invite-only gathering for like-minded clinicians exploring the intersection of neuroscience, therapy, and altered states of consciousness. We foster deep, candid discussions in a space that values intellectual rigour, humility, and curiosity.

Our goal is to create a supportive community where practitioners can challenge, consult, and collaborate—without pretence or dogma. Conversations often begin with psychedelics but evolve into broader, more enriching discussions.

This isn’t a clinical case conference, nor is it an esoteric free-for-all. We strike a balance between evidence-based practice and the ineffable, between rigorous thought and open-hearted exploration.
