The Third “S”: Support
In psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, set and setting are widely acknowledged as foundational principles for ensuring safe and meaningful experiences. However, the transformation catalysed by these tools doesn’t begin or end in the session itself. There is a third “S” that must rise to prominence if we are to fulfil our duty of care: support.
Support is the long-term scaffolding that enables individuals to sustain and actualise the profound insights gained during psychedelic experiences. Without robust and ongoing support, even the most positive breakthroughs risk fading into fleeting memories or, worse, becoming destabilising.
Beyond the Session
To meet this responsibility, we must ask critical questions about the ecosystems we create:
How do we ensure clients are equipped to integrate insights into their daily lives?
What role do we as clinicians play in ongoing care, and where should onward referrals take over?
Have we built networks robust enough to address the complex interplay between mental health, creativity, and community reintegration?
Strengthening Collaboration
The task is too vast for any one discipline. We must embrace collaborative paradigms that connect therapists, coaches, allied health professionals, and other practitioners across silos. This could involve:
Shadowing Across Professions: Facilitating opportunities for practitioners to learn from and shadow each other, deepening mutual understanding and strengthening interdisciplinary networks.
Cross-Disciplinary Referrals: Creating clear pathways for onward referrals, ensuring clients receive comprehensive care beyond the scope of any single professional’s expertise.
Post-Session Communities: Supporting clients with access to networks that foster sustained growth, creativity, and accountability.
Reimagining Duty of Care
Support requires us to think beyond the immediate outcomes of a session. It calls for systems of care that empower clients to transition from insight to action, from catharsis to change, and from healing to growth.
By prioritising support as the third S, we ensure that psychedelic therapy is not merely an experience but a catalyst for meaningful and enduring transformation.
Let’s build the frameworks and networks to support not just safe journeys but sustainable lives.
About the Salon
This is an informal, invite-only gathering for like-minded clinicians exploring the intersection of neuroscience, therapy, and altered states of consciousness. We foster deep, candid discussions in a space that values intellectual rigour, humility, and curiosity.
Our goal is to create a supportive community where practitioners can challenge, consult, and collaborate—without pretence or dogma. Conversations often begin with psychedelics but evolve into broader, more enriching discussions.
This isn’t a clinical case conference, nor is it an esoteric free-for-all. We strike a balance between evidence-based practice and the ineffable, between rigorous thought and open-hearted exploration.
